This project is part of a wider masterplan to make Amman more pedestrian friendly and provide more public spaces. Rainbow Street was an active mixed-use neighbourhood in the 1980s and the project has fostered its already nascent revival with a minimal intervention to enhance its existing qualities. A 1.5-kilometre pedestrian promenade now runs along the street, punctuated by eight urban nodes, ranging from public gardens to a panoramic lookout on the roof of an old house. Signage, traffic solutions and street furniture have also been addressed. The result has done much to encourage social inclusiveness in the area and create a vibrant public life. Amman Electricity Hangar testifies to the advent of power production in the 1930s that proved key to the making of modern Jordan. Now adapted into a public space for socio-cultural and art-related events, a steel walkway has been added to house a gallery narrating the city’s electrification. The Hangar’s main facade is glazed to integrate the interior space with the public plaza in front. The new Ras al Ein Gallery reflects the Hangar’s concrete construction, but its dynamic cubic form contrasts with its monolithic neighbour, instead reflecting the ‘cascade’ of mountainside houses behind. Claustra - hollow concrete blocks popular in Ammani architecture - are used on its facade and as semi-transparent screens within the gallery space. Source: Aga Khan Trust for Culture

In designing this visitor centre for the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature in Jordan, the architects based the scheme on an understanding of the cultural landscape, and creating a unique destination for nature and responsible tourism. The layout of the centre creates an interactive journey along an "architectural promenade", all the while maintaining a close connection between indoor and outdoor spaces that offer myriad possibilities to view the wildlife in the Reserve. The material used, different types of volcanic basalt sourced locally, creates a positive contrast with the land geology and its green cover. The environmentally responsive architecture makes use of a solar chimney and solar panels on the roof. Source: Aga Khan Trust for Culture
