Ruba Kasmo

Ruba Tamim Kasmo is an associate professor specializing in the preservation of cultural heritage, with a particular emphasis on Islamic and traditional architecture in the Middle East. She earned her Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Architecture (Restoration) from Istanbul Technical University, following a M.A. and B.Sc. in Architecture from Aleppo University, Syria.

Her academic career spans Fatih Sultan Mehmet Waqf University in Istanbul (2015-present) and Aleppo University (2002-2005), where she has taught design studios, conservation, and architectural history. Her scholarly work engages with the architectural and urban legacies, exploring how built heritage reflects broader historical, social, and cultural dynamics.

Her fellowship at the Foundation of Prussian Cultural Heritage (Berlin) and research grants—including from the Max van Berchem Foundation and Barakat Trust—have supported her work in documenting Aleppo’s historic architecture and urban fabric.

Notably, she was a member of UNESCO-UNITAR's satellite-based damage assessment of Aleppo’s World Heritage sites during the armed conflict, and then of the Syrian Heritage Archive Project at the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin. Her professional portfolio also includes multiple collaborations as an expert in mission, consultant, and researcher with ICOMOS-ICCROM, the German Archaeological Institute-Istanbul Branch, and IRCICA.
