Consisting of eight lectures, the series, Architecture and Urban Development of the Deccan Sultanates, begins with an overview of the evolution of Indo-Islamic architecture and the manner in which the newly introduced social, cultural, and political ideals and religious beliefs and the existing Indian traditions interacted and shaped the architectural style. In this lecture, you will learn about the evolution of the Islamic world in India, through historical and chronological outlines, highlighting local characteristics and organisational features and the principal characteristics and elements of Indo-Islamic architecture.

This series of lectures was prepared in collaboration between the Centre for the Study of Architecture andCultural Heritage of India, Arabia and Maghreb (ArCHIAM), based at the University of Liverpool, UK, and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture Education Programme.

This is the 1st lecture in a series of 10.  In this lecture you will learn about:
